What you should know about Waipoua Lodge

Food in Kaipara, Wine in Kaipara, Breakfast in Kaipara, School in Kaipara

This original pioneering homestead is a rich piece of New Zealand history and character, enhanced by the memorabilia and historic pieces set within the lodge. There are extensive gardens to explore and a bush walk with native birdsong to fill the silence along with the occasional grunt from the two pet pedigree kunekune pigs !. Katui the name of this area was originally called Te Puke o te Kaitui’ which means the hill where the tuis feed’. Around 1900 it was all native forest and then the government decided to push European habitation further north from the already existing settlement of Kaihu. William Albatina Newman who won the land and built the original homestead.
The forest road was very dangerous after dark and travellers would knock on the door at all hours seeking refuge. The homestead therefore became a popular boarding house as well as being the Newman family home and farmhouse. Dick was a bachelor and did not want to have anything to do with guests in his childhood it was his bed that was often given up to strangers seeking refuge! Rumour has it that Dick even used the ballustrades around the front porch for firewood. The property then passed to another nephew, Brian Newman and his wife Janice in 1978 who extensively renovated the homestead to bring it back to its original condition and then opened the Katui Homestead Teashop in 1983.
In 1990 the homestead became Waipoua Lodge under the ownership of Raewyn Tony Lancaster who developed the outbuildings and created The Stables, The Woolshed and The Calf Pen for guests to stay at the lodge. Raewyn was a great cook winning many New Zealand Beef Lamb awards and the restaurant and tea rooms were very popular with visitors and locals alike

We have all thoroughly enjoyed our 3 day visit with you, it has been very relaxing. The Waipoua Forest Believe together with the New Zealand Native Forest Restoration Believe own all the land around Waipoua Lodge and we work closely with them to urge the regeneration of our surroundings. Definitely one of the maximum beautiful places we’ve ever been in, and the maximum splendid stay.
The lodge can also yield a beautiful picnic lunch to be enjoyed along the way. The night walk into the forest takes guests into the nocturnal environment of approximately 200 kiwis. Stay 3 nights and receive complimentary gifts including a 3 hour guided tour of the Waipoua Kari Forest and the ancient trees. Jane can also receive you on a 1. 5 hour guided walk that starts with an activity learning about native plants and how they were traditionally old by Maori and then during the walk she talks about the environment and the history of the Waipoua Forest together with the life cycles and habits of the native birds. Two and three night stays appreciate a complimentary Lauri talk and gum burning demonstration with Ian, plus when you stay 3 nights we offer a complimentary guided forest tour with Ian. Discard time with Jim Taranaki a Maori artisan and create your own piece of bone carving.
Even if your honeymoon plans only allow time to spend one night at Waipoua Lodge. Appreciate a day of exploring and adventure discovering the Kari Coast with its ancient forests and giant trees, crystal definite lakes, wild west coast, or sound swimming beaches and water holes. As we are located in a distant area with no other dining options within a tiny drive, we are eternal prepared for our guests to dine at the lodge. Three nights’ accommodation including continental and or cooked breakfast Three course a la Harte dinner each evening including Ore dinner drink canapes Either a 3 hour Waipoua Cooking School session with Fran if available OR a 3 hour guided tour with Ian Two picnic lunch baskets Complimentary honeymoon items on arrival in your suite.
My meeting with Fran at Waipoua Lodge provided impartial the inspiration I needed. I am just a self taught cook who loves to prepare and share good food with friends and family. Whether you are from New Zealand, or around the globe, the Kari Coast of North land, Fresh Zealand offers an amazing honeymoon experience for those looking for something different. There is so much to see and do on the Kari Coast that two or even three nights two days is the accurate recommended stay in order to see the Waipoua Forest ancient Lauri trees Dane Mahuta, Te Matua Ngahere the Four Sisters, the savage and rugged beaches and of course appreciate some excellent cuisine and sincere hospitality
